December 1st, 2020 – Two Days Later

Sun creeps through the vertical blinds that are the bane of my existence. Their clacking woke me up half an hour ago and I haven’t summoned the energy to get up and either turn off the ceiling fan or open them a bit more so they stop making that god-forsaken noise. I exhale a long sigh, drag my hand over my face, and finally force myself to get out of bed. It’s nothing new for me to be low-energy, but the thought of having to unpack all this shit for the second time within less than a year is absolutely draining.

Once again, I find myself wishing I hadn’t moved.

The house is fine; the plumbing works, the neighborhood is quiet, and there aren’t any ghosts—I should be especially thrilled about that last one. But still, I drag my feet across the floor with zero enthusiasm at the prospect of finally getting settled.

I regretfully twist the wand a few times to open the blinds and squint against the bright sun. Another glorious morning . . .

Binx meows at me from the doorway, letting me know he’s ready to be fed. Of course, I follow him. Once my boy is fed, I grab a Greek yogurt and pour some dry cereal into it, mixing it for the perfect crunchy texture, so I can actually tolerate it. As I eat, I can feel the boxes stacked high in the living room looming over me, silently judging me.

I really, really do not want to deal with this shit. Resigned to my fate, I run out to the car to grab my speaker and then queue up some My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, and Radiohead then get started on the first box.

Hours fly by and I finish unpacking everything for the kitchen, so I decide to take a break. I grab my e-reader from my bag and fling myself down on the couch. I really should shower first; I’ve been sweating, but I can already feel my back and arms protesting from spending all that time alternating between over-extending to reach the top cabinets or crouching down like a shrimp to put stuff away in the lower cabinets. Forcing the thought of my sweat soaking into the fabric from my mind, I scroll through my library and pick back up on one of the paranormal romances I temporarily dnf’d months ago.

I blink my eyes open as my groggy mind catches up with the fact that I fell asleep. Between the accidental nap and the still-unfamiliar space, I’m especially disoriented. A yawn escapes me as stretch my legs, but I freeze when I notice the box of books I had on the floor has spilled over.

Those are way too heavy for Binx to knock over himself. “Binxie, come here, honey,” I call out in as even of a tone as I can muster. He doesn’t come.

My heartbeat picks up, drowning out my ability to hear. I rely on my tired eyes instead, scanning the area.
